Interesting Information about the Song
According to biographers of Paul McCartney and The Beatles, the melody for “Yesterday” came to McCartney in a dream while he was staying at the Wimpole Street home of his then-girlfriend Jane Asher and her family. Upon waking, he rushed to a piano to play the tune and ensure he wouldn’t forget it.
McCartney initially feared that he had subconsciously plagiarized someone else’s work, a phenomenon known as cryptomnesia. As he described, “For about a month I went round to people in the music business and asked them whether they had ever heard it before. Eventually, it felt like I was handing it in to the police. I thought if no one claimed it after a few weeks, then I could have it.”
“Yesterday” was originally titled “Scrambled Eggs” and featured a completely different set of lyrics. It became one of The Beatles’ most covered songs, with thousands of artists recording their versions. Despite its humble beginnings, the song’s poignant melody and reflective lyrics have cemented its place as one of the most iconic and enduring ballads in music history.
